Dan
Overcash
Oct 20, 1951 — Jun 14, 2025
Daniel Vance Overcash, passed away with his wife at his bedside on June 14, 2025, at Union Atrium Hospital. He was born on October 20, 1951, and was the fourth and youngest child of Walter and Dorothy Overcash. Dan grew up in Gaston County, in Cramerton, and as he would often say, had an idyllic childhood spending time on the banks of the South Fork River, playing sports, and being fascinated by watching trains move through his hometown. As a young man, Dan was an active member of the Cramerton Volunteer Fire Department. He was a graduate of Gaston College and Belmont Abbey College.
Dan was drawn to a career in law enforcement and became a member of the Gastonia Police Department. He served the GPD in the divisions of patrol, crime prevention, and as a detective sergeant. Dan was recognized by the city of Gastonia, along with his fellow officer, for his heroic efforts in stopping an armed robbery in progress as gunshots were exchanged with four suspects who were attempting to flee the crime scene. He was the recipient of the Young Outstanding Police Officer of the year award.
Dan would later accept a position as the special investigator for the Gaston County District Attorney's Office Judicial District 27-A. He was a criminal justice instructor for Gaston College and developed and coordinated an officer survival training program which was later adopted by the State of North Carolina. Following his employment in Gaston County, Dan began a long career in insurance fraud investigations and retired from Allstate Insurance Company (Special Investigations Unit) in Charlotte in 2015. The members of his unit that he supervised often said Dan was the best manager they ever had. Dan was very involved in the North Carolina Insurance Crime Information Exchange serving as president as well as being on the board of directors. He authored a book entitled Insurance Crimes Defined and was well-known and well-respected among his colleagues in the insurance industry.
On March 28, 1989, Dan married Gloria Harrington at Belmont Abbey and their love and devotion lasted for more than thirty-six years. Dan and Gloria built a home in Peachland and Dan quickly became immersed in living in rural Anson County. Dan was a member of the Peachland Volunteer Fire Department and served in many capacities including treasurer as well as sitting on the board of directors. He became the go-to person for grant writing and was looking forward to the arrival of a new fire truck, for which he spent countless hours and several years exploring funding options to make the truck a reality for his department. In recent years, Dan was also instrumental in obtaining an electronic sign for the fire department. Throughout his many years of service, Dan received numerous awards for his work at the PVFD.
In his spare time, Dan enjoyed wood working, trains, riding his John Deere tractor and gator, and spending time in his barn and shop. Many good memories were made on the patio of Dan's barn enjoying his famous grilled hamburgers and hot dogs. Time spent in his mountain home in Maggie Valley provided Dan much enjoyment. Before his health began to decline, Dan was an active member of Peachland United Methodist Church where he served his church in many capacities including chairing the building committee for the new sanctuary.
Dan was predeceased by his parents, his son, Daniel Overcash, his brother, Fred Overcash, his sister, Alene Holloway, his beloved in-laws, John & Frances Harrington, and his brother-in-law who Dan considered his brother, the Reverend John Wesley Harrington Jr. His much-loved dogs, Bo and Lilly also predeceased him.
Dan is survived by his wife, Gloria Harrington Overcash, his sister, Carolyn Barker of Dallas, his son, Michael Overcash of Gastonia, his sisters-in-law, Betsy Harrington of Indian Land, SC, and Janice Clark of Versailles, KY, and numerous nieces and nephews from both the Overcash and Harrington sides of his family. His miniature poodle, Maggie will forever miss his sweet and loving presence.
Dan is also survived by Donnie Hagler of Marshville who gave him new life when Donnie became a kidney donor for Dan in 2018. The Overcash and Harrington families will be forever grateful for Donnie's generous and unselfish gift.
Dan was a kind and gentle soul who rarely raised his voice and was always willing to help others. He lived his life by demonstrating true Christian principles and values.
A memorial service to honor Dan's life will be held at Peachland United Methodist Church on Friday, June 27, 2025, at 11:00 am. Following the service, the family will greet friends at a reception at the Peachland Volunteer Fire Department.
Memorials can be made to the Peachland Fire Dept, PO Box 72, Peachland, NC 28133 or Atrium Health Foundation, 7800 Providence Rd, Ste 208, Charlotte, NC 28226. In the memo line please add: Dan Overcash. Atrium Health Foundation provides financial assistance to kidney patients and their families through its patient assistance fund for specific needs such as medication, lodging, and transportation.
It would be meaningful to Dan if you would consider sharing the gift of life through organ donation.
The family would like to thank the transplant physicians, nurses and staff at Metrolina Nephrology Associates in Monroe and Charlotte for their care of Dan during the last eleven years. Doctors Amanda L. Harrington and Phillips B. Harrington were also instrumental in offering guidance and collaborating with Dan's doctors during his extended illness.
