Obituary

Richard David Horne, 77, of Marshville passed away Wednesday March 2 at Hospice of Union County in Monroe. David was born June 15, 1938 in Rock Hill, South Carolina to Richard Franklin and Margaret Harkey Horne. David attended Wingate Junior College and served in the Army National Guard. He was an active member of Union Grove Baptist Church serving as deacon and on various committees. He was instrumental in organizing a Brotherhood and was very honored to have it named the David Horne Brotherhood.
David was an engineer at Springs Mills and in sales in his early career and later worked in furniture. He started his own home repair business in the early '90's until he retired in 2010. David was very active in Scouting serving as Scoutmaster, involved with the Order of the Arrow, District Chairman and on the District Advancement Committee for several years. It was through scouting he made a lifetime bond with a group of men who would later become the Over the Hill Gang (OTHG). For almost 40 years, they have camped and traveled nationwide.
In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his brother Paul Horne, his first wife of 38 years, Margaret Patterson Horne and a grandson, Travis Horne, OTHG brothers, Vance Apple and Lynn Newton. He is survived by his wife of 16 years Sarah Nance Horne, sons Eddie Horne of Hickory, Sam Horne of Morganton, daughters Leah Williams of Hickory and Meredith Marchena (Paul) of Charlotte. Granddaughters Miranda Horne, Brianna Williams, Shameka Horne of Hickory, Sarah Grace and Dianna Rose Marchena of Charlotte and one great granddaughter Le'Ana Horne of Hickory.
Visitation will be 10:00 AM on Saturday March 5 at Union Grove Baptist Church fellowship hall with service to follow at 11:00 in the sanctuary conducted by Pastor Eddie Beck and Pastor Roger Nance. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be the OTHG members, Ernie Sills, David Cook, David Campbell, Bruce Beerbower, Forest Ferrell, Gary Apple, Scott Sills, Patrick Campbell, and Marty Cook.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the David Horne Brotherhood at Union Grove.
In lieu of flowers, the family ask that memorials be made to the Stegall Boy's Home in Marshville, The H. Lynn Newton, Jr. BSA Troop 250 Scholarship Fund at St. Luke's UMC Hickory, NC, Hospice of Union County, Union Grove Baptist Church Cemetery Fund or the American Cancer Society.
