Marshville - Nan Griffin West passed away peacefully in her sleep August 5, 2015 at Autumn Care in Marshville, NC. Born in Marshville on Dec. 18, 1921, Nan was the daughter of the late Benjamin C. Griffin and Nancy Jane Ashcraft Griffin. She was also preceded in death by her older sister Lola Griffin Haines, and her husband James (Jimmy) L. West.
She graduated from Marshville High School and Carolina Business College in Charlotte, NC. While working in Charlotte she met her husband to be, Jimmy, who was awaiting his call to join pilot training for the Army Air Corps. Married April 4, 1942, she followed her husband through assignments in several states as he trained pilots during WWII.
Nan returned to Marshville in 1946 soon to be followed by her husband when he left active service with the Air Force. She worked as a secretary and bookkeeper for several businesses in Marshville before becoming Business Manager for Gaye Chevrolet. She worked there until her retirement in 1986. After retirement, she lived with her husband at their home just west of Marshville. She remained in their home for several years after Jimmy's death in 2007, moving to an assisted living facility in Monroe, NC in 2012. She had moved to Autumn Care earlier this year after a fall.
A member of Marshville Methodist Church since 1938, Nan served in many capacities in the Church. She taught Sunday school, was President of the United Methodist Women's Club, conducted a program for retired members for eight years, directed weddings and served twice on the Building Committee. She was also active in civic affairs, serving as president of the Marshville Women's Club.
Nan is survived by two daughters: Linda West Southern and her husband Phillip Sterling Southern and Lisa Ellen Blalock and her husband Kelley T. Blalock; four grandchildren: Joshua L. Southern, Margaret L. Southern, Reed A. Blalock and Lainey R. Blalock.
Funeral services will be held 11 am Saturday at Morgan & Son Chapel with burial to follow in the Marshville City Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
