Marshville
Marshville — Nancy Stewart, 82, passed away June 12, 2022 at Hospice House of Union County. Born November 24, 1939 in Anson County she was the daughter of the late Leslie & Mary Polk Oxendine. She was also preceded in death by husbands Billy Vaughn & Hal Stewart, siblings Buddy Oxendine, sister Jane Tarlton, and son Kyle Vaughn.
Nancy grew up hanging out at the livery stable, riding any horse or pony in sight. Horses were always her passion throughout life. She graduated from Marshville High School in 1959. She achieved numerous basketball successes and became homecoming queen as well. She married the love of her life, Billy Vaughn, in 1960. Raising two children and having a logging business in South Carolina took up most of their time, but they still enjoyed skiing, horseback riding, and spending time with family. Through life events and after the death of her first husband, she returned to North Carolina to raise her children. Being a single mother, she was able to cook a hot meal, mow the grass, change the oil in the car, and win first place in the local barrel racing competition all in a weekend. Nancy retired from Yale Norton after 19 dedicated years to care for her second husband, Hal Stewart. During that time she met her best friend, Margaret Hatley, and that friendship has continued to this day. The last 25 years were devoted to caring for others, as in her nature. In 2001, she returned to her childhood church where she faithfully served on various committees and enjoyed good fellowship. She loved to be outside where she created beautiful gardens including all types of flowers and vegetables. She made sure that the community had plenty of tomatoes to enjoy during the summertime. Nancy lived a life full of adventure; trips to the beach, mountains, horse shows, senior trips, and many adventures with her grandkids. She testified that hard work, honesty, and a bit of sarcasm could take you a long way in life. She taught us well, served the Lord, and although she experienced lots of tragedy in her life, she had a life well-lived.
A funeral service to celebrate the life of Nancy will be 4 PM Wednesday, June 15, 2022 at Marshville United Methodist Church followed by burial in the Marshville City Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3:00 - 3:45 PM in the church fellowship hall.
