Locust- Mr. Oscar Y. Harward, 75, of Locust, NC, passed away Sunday, June 23, 2019 following a battle with COPD and lung cancer. He was a faithful follower of Jesus and was a member of Freedom Baptist Church in Locust, NC. He lived most of his life in the Burnsville, Marshville and Monroe areas of Union County. Oscar was born May 9, 1944 to the late Ina Virginia Jones Harward and William Alexander Harward, Sr. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sisters: Mrs. Ruth Hall, Mrs. Virginia Beaver and an infant sister Ruby Harward.
Oscar graduated from Anson High School in 1962 and went on to serve his country in the North Carolina National Guard. He also studied at Anson Community College and Central Piedmont Community College. He spent many years working as a life insurance salesman and in HVAC. He was an active member of the Union County Republican Party in the 1980's and 1990's the highlight of which was meeting the future President of the United States, Ronald Reagan. He was also active member of the American Legion and a Master Mason at Union Lodge #618 AF&AM in Midland. He will be remembered as a proud patriot and a US veteran.
Memorial Services will be 2pm Sunday at Freedom Baptist Church, 20015 Coley Store Road, Locust, NC, 28079. The family will greet friends following the service.
Oscar is survived by his son Michael Harward and three grandchildren, Andrew, Nicholas and Cora of Louisville, KY; brothers William Harward, Jr. and his wife Linda of Kannapolis, Furman Harward and his wife Joyce of Monroe and sister Nellie Austin of Florida. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive him.
