Obituary

Ruby Rachel Rorie Hughes
"Moma Hughes", "Mama Hughes", "Railroad Rambler" "GrandmaGrandmaGrandma", "Big Rachel" If you are reading this, then you probably knew Mama Hughes, and if you didn't you'll wish you had. We hope this will bring a smile to your face, induce a hearty chuckle and allow reflections of an eternal optimist, as her glass was always half full. Mama Hughes entered the gates of heaven on October 23, 2016 where she was met by her adoring husband and one true love, Needem Elliott Hughes Jr, her children Needem Elliott Hughes III, Martha Lillian Hughes and Needam Rorie Hughes.
Mama Hughes blessed us with many important life lessons such as: Tomatoes and onions go with everything. Having flat feet just means you have a good foundation. The more the merrier. What don't kill will fatten. You get more with honey than you do with vinegar. Put some socks on or you'll catch cold. Never leave home without a smile and lipstick. It'll all come out in the wash. Never pass on an opportunity to sing and dance. Don't be afraid to talk to anyone, cause we all put our pants on the same way. Act as if. Variety is the spice of life.
She was a Peachland, NC girl; graduated from Peachland School in 1945, Valedictorian in her class of 13. She obtained a business degree from Kings Business College. In 1978, Mama Hughes moved her family to Oakboro, NC; where she lived until 2005. She was known by many, as the "insurance lady". Mama Hughes retired in 2004 after 24 years with 1st Million Insurance Company. She loved heading out "on the insurance trail", as she called it; to cold call, knocking on doors in all the counties she loved in North Carolina; primarily in Union, Stanly and Anson counties. She had a gift of gab; loved meeting and talking to people.
Mama was there for every "life" moment. To celebrate or to comfort. She was the one constant you could always count on. She was our biggest fan, a steadfast source of unwavering support, and unconditional love. Mama leaves behind family who will join her later, children, Ruby Ellen Hughes Prince & husband Lenoy Prince; Elliott Stanley Hughes & wife Maria Pittman Hughes; Bryan Faulkner Hughes; Julia Rachel Hughes & husband Stephen Mallette; Amanda Gore Hughes Sanders Carroll & husband Doug Carroll. Grandchildren, Amanda Ellen Garner Reinhardt, Andrew Evan Hughes, Phillip Michael Mallette, Bryan Elliott Hughes, Julia Austin Sanders Carroll, Carly Jo Hughes, Danielle Marie Hughes, Melonie Marie Mallette and great grandchildren, Hannah Jadyn Reinhardt and Keira Makayla Reinhardt. Michael Clyde Rorie, brother and children. Many other family and friends too many to list. Rachel Hughes' body will be laid to rest at Peachland Cemetery. The pallbearer's will be Doug Carroll, Steve Mallette, Phillip Mallette, Stan Hughes, Bryan Hughes, John Morton, Lenoy Prince and Mark Morton
At Mama Rachel's table, there was always room for one more, so in lieu of flowers, we ask that you pay it forward. Buy someone's groceries; Sponsor a family this holiday season; Pay for someone's meal at a restaurant; Reach out to your elderly neighbor; Offer a smile… You get the idea.
Our sincerest thank you to all the staff at the Little Flower Assisted Living. We will be forever grateful for the love and care you gave her these many years.
Funeral services will be 2 PM Tuesday from the Chapel of Morgan & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Peachland City Cemetery. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
