Marshville - Mr. Roy McBryde, 91, died Monday, October 26, 2015 at Pruitt Health Nursing Home in Monroe, NC. Born August 12, 1924, he was a son of the late Forrest Glenn and Annie Stone McBryde of Rockingham, NC. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jane M. McBryde; son Roy McBryde, Jr., two sisters; Joann Morgan, and Dorothy Cottingham of Rockingham, NC and one brother, Myron (Buddy) McBryde of Bermuda Run, NC.
After high school, Mr. McBryde attended Presbyterian Junior College. He volunteered to serve our country in WWII and was in active combat with both the Army and the Navy. He later finished his long military service with the National Guard.
At the conclusion of his military service, Mr. McBryde had a long career with the state of North Carolina in various capacities. In commemoration of his distinguished service to the state, he was conferred the Order of the Long Leaf Pine from Governor Jim Hunt on January 1,1995. Perhaps Mr. McBryde's most prized affiliation was with Forest Hills High School sports. From the first year the school opened, he was a constant presence and supporter. Forest Hills paid lasting tribute to "Mr. Roy" by naming the baseball field in his honor and by establishing the Roy McBryde Invitational Basketball Tournament. Additionally, Mr. McBryde was a member of the Marshville First Presbyterian Church, a member of the Beaver Dam Masonic Lodge, and an Oasis Shriner.
A memorial service commemorating Mr. McBryde's life will be held at Morgan & Son Funeral Home Wednesday, October 28 at 4:00pm with Military Honors rendered by the U.S. Navy. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Rev. Rod Yow and Rev. Edward Henegar will officiate.
Mr. McBryde is survived by his wife, Barbara Philbeck McBryde of the home; daughters, Jane Elkin and her husband Kenny of Marshville, NC; Rosemary Parker and her husband Dan of Rolesville, NC; grandchildren, Danny and Nate Parker; brother Forest Glen (F.G.) Mcbryde and wife, Betty of Ellerbe, NC.
