Marshville - Mr. Russell Eugene Hypes, 84, passed away Saturday, January 9, 2021, at the Hospice House in Monroe.  Born on September 10, 1936 in Tipton, West Virginia, he was a son of the late Allen Russell Hypes and Laura Grey Hypes.  He was also preceded in death by the love of his life, Shelia Nance Hypes and daughter, Carolyn Marie Petrino.  Mr. Hypes is survived by many who loved him and will miss him dearly; to know him was to love him.

His life was devoted to excellence in and out of service.  He served his country well for over 36 years in the United States Navy and Department of Defense.  Over his 20 plus years of honorable service in the United States Navy he was involved with the complex refueling systems of aircraft carriers, including the USS Forrestal (CV-59).  His military and federal service took him around the world to over 20 countries and five continents, including Antarctica.  His military and civilian career is illustrated by his dedication to duty and diligence for the best.  After retiring from the military service he was the Program Manager of Alongside Aircraft Refueling Contracts in the Naval Supply System Command.  While at the Naval Supply System Command he was instrumental in implementing a safer non-combustible fuel onboard Marine One, the aircraft that transports the President of the United States.  While working for the Department of Defense he was awarded the Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Award for his incredible contributions to the Navy Petroleum Office, and later retired in December 1993.

A graveside service to celebrate the life of Russell will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, January 16, 2021, from Union Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, please send donations or memorials to Hospice House of Union County or Humane Society of Union County, in his honor.
