Dateline - Wingate Mr. John Stephen Smith, 66, passed away on March 28, 2014 at his residence. He was born on March 22, 1948 in Union County to John Zeb and Eugenia Marze Smith. He was a retired engineer for IBM Funeral Services will be 3pm Sunday at Wingate Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Wingate City Cemetery. Visitation will be 6pm-8pm Saturday evening in the sanctuary of Wingate Baptist Church. Stephen is survived by his devoted wife of 44 years Mrs. Kay Ross Smith. He also leaves behind 3 children, Mindy Smith Stegall and husband Randy, Brandon Keith Smith and wife Amy and Lori Smith Powell and husband Christopher. In addition Stephen is survived by his loving mother Eugenia Marze Smith. He was preceded in death by his father Zeb Smith. Stephen was blessed with 3 grandchildren David Stegall, Emily Stegall, and Madison Smith. Stephen graduated from NC State University in 1970 with a degree in electrical engineering. He was an engineer/ manager working for IBM for 33 years. He had his Real Estate Brokers License. In addition he served as a Union County Magistrate for 5 years.
